This article is about Halloween specials that were planned or announced, but were ultimately cancelled during production.

The Muppet Halloween Show[]

Halloweenshow01

The Muppet Halloween Show was a special proposed in the early 1970s, that ultimately served as the foundation for one of The Muppet Show pilots.

A script excerpt describes one of the special's characters:

Dr. Bredlow Freedly is the Muppet scientist who invented MEL (short for Malfunctioning Electronic Logician). Freedly attempts to demonstrate the newest use for this mechanical marvel -- first, the machine will inhale our polluted air. It will then condense the smog, fumes and filth into handy little cubes for shipment to the less industrialized countries of the world. (Zounds! We'll make a fortune!)

In 1991, TV Guide reported the following on the Muppets' return to television:

The classic Muppet characters -- including Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Kermit and Gonzo -- will be slowly making their way back onto television, beginning with a Muppet special tentatively planned for Halloween. That's the word from Jim Henson Productions president Brian Henson, who says the company is "coordinating an overall strategy" to get his late father's priceless puppets "back on the air and to do more with them. We'll start in a small way, primarily with holiday specials." [1]

Early treatments included scenes where the Muppet characters turned into classic Hollywood monsters. While such a special was never made, the idea of the Muppets as movie monsters resurfaced in the video game Muppet Monster Adventure.

Untitled 2009 Muppet Halloween series[]

In a a Q&A session during a presentation and guest panel hosted by Craig Shemin at the Walt Disney World Passholders at Disney's Hollywood Studios on March 7, 2009, it was revealed that a new Halloween special with the Muppets was in the works.[2] Rumors circulated that the special was scheduled to air in October that year,[3] but was later confirmed at that year's D23 Expo that the special was on hold until 2010.[4] Afterwards, however, production on the special was postponed in favor of The Muppets Studio focusing its creative energy on the 2011 theatrical Muppets movie, with the possibility of returning to the Halloween special for 2012.[5] To date, however, no further news about the Halloween special ever surfaced afterward.
